Locked out
Safely, right now
- Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
- Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
- Keep ID that shows your address handy if it is with you.
Key broke in the lock
Safely, right now
- Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
- Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.
Lock won't turn
Safely, right now
- Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
- Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.
Lost keys
Safely, right now
- If your address was with the keys, treat the lock as known to whoever finds them.
- Don't leave a spare key anywhere outside while you wait, under the mat or elsewhere.
Rekeying keeps the lock you already own and changes which key opens it, which makes it the tidy answer to a lost key, a departed roommate or a staff change. Across Gorewood Acres we rekey single doors, whole houses and small commercial buildings, and cut the new keys on the spot. Calls from Castlemore, Coleraine, Ebenezer, Grahamsville and Wildfield are covered too.

The fix, explained · Gorewood Acres
What is the door doing?
EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou stepped out to grab the recycling bin and the door swung shut behind you.
The fix
A home lockout service is a visit whose whole purpose is to get you back inside your own home when the door is locked against you. The locksmith first confirms you have the right to be there, usually by matching photo identification to the address or seeing a lease, deed or property-management record.
EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceMinus eighteen with a wind, and the exterior cylinder on the shop door has frozen solid overnight after yesterday's slush.
The fix
A business lockout service reopens commercial premises when the door is locked and nobody on site can open it. The locksmith begins by confirming that the person asking for entry has authority to act for the business, through identification and a document or a phone call that ties them to the premises.
EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click.
The fix
Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder.
EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThey did not get in.
The fix
A failed break-in is still a repair. When a lock holds against a pry bar or a kick, the force goes somewhere: a strike plate bends, screws loosen, the door edge takes a gouge, the deadbolt binds where the bolt met the strike under load.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningEvery time you pull the key out of the side door it comes away gritty.
The fix
A lock rarely seizes without warning. It asks for a wiggle, then a firmer wiggle, then it needs the door pulled toward you, and one morning it stops.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyThe renovation wrapped up in the spring.
The fix
The first useful move after losing a key is to think about where it worked rather than where it went. A house key commonly opens more than the front door: the back door, a side entrance, the door from the garage into the house, a shed, a gate padlock, sometimes a storage room or a mailbox.

What the census means at the door
23%
Newer homes. About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In areas of recent construction, doors mostly carry builder-grade locks that were chosen for the whole development at once. They work, but a household that wants more can upgrade the cylinder or the whole set without any surprises about fit.
53%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).
Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.

Which fix fits?
IfThe kids keep losing house keys.
ThenA keypad lock on the door they use.
A code cannot be left at school; the mechanical key stays as backup and codes change whenever you like.
IfAn older parent lives alone and you worry about getting in.
ThenA lockbox with a key, or a keypad lock with your own code.
Either lets family or a caregiver in when needed, on your terms.
IfYou host paying guests and hand over keys each week.
ThenA keypad lock with rotating guest codes.
Each guest gets a code that expires at checkout; nothing needs collecting and nothing can be copied.
IfIt is a January morning, minus twenty with the wind, and the key will not enter the door cylinder.
When the keys are truly gone, a car lockout call becomes two jobs in one visit.
Questions we hear most
My car key snapped in the door. Is that a locksmith job?
Yes. Vehicle door locks and ignitions use wafer cylinders that respond to the same extractor tools. Once the blade is out, the plastic head you are holding, which carries the transponder chip and any remote buttons, can usually take a freshly cut blade so the car keeps recognizing it. The ignition is checked as well, since a broken key sometimes disturbs the wafers.
Can I just have another key cut instead?
You can, and it solves being without a key. It leaves the lost one working, though, which is the half of the problem that keeps people awake. Rekeying takes about as much effort as a trip to a hardware store counter and ends with a new key in your hand and the old one retired. If the key was mislaid somewhere it will never be found and named nothing, a plain copy is a fair choice.
Will my door hardware look any different afterwards?
No. The work happens inside the cylinder, so the bolt, handle, finish and strike plate stay exactly as they are, and nothing new is cut into the door. The only visible change is the key in your hand. If a cylinder does have to be replaced, because its keyway is incompatible with the others or it has worn out, the locksmith picks one in a matching finish so the door keeps a consistent look.
Why does my knob turn without moving the latch?
Most often the square hole in the hub inside the case has rounded with age, or the spindle has worn, so the knob turns a good way before it grips. Loose knob set screws produce the same slack. Less often a latch spring has broken and the latch is simply sitting inside the door. All of these are corrected during service by replacing the spindle and screws, bushing or replacing the hub, or fitting a new spring.
